Week 8 update, sharing the news with friends, and a recipe! (late post #3)

In case you missed the news… we’re expecting! Because we were waiting quite a while to share our news with everyone, I wrote a few posts to record our experiences and feelings of the new chapter in our lives. Here’s part one in case ya missed it… and part two… and now here’s part three below… and part four...

Week 8 Update

My first BUMPdate! Thanks to Little Baby Garvin and Schnelle, I stole their weekly pregnancy update questionnaire and decided to start my own. I’ll get to the questions right away, then share some fun details of our very exciting weekend!

How far along? 8 weeks

Size of the baby? 5/8″ – size of a kidney bean!

Total weight gain: whoops, gotta go check

Maternity clothes? no

Stretch marks? no

Sleep: getting about 7 hrs a night, waking up once to pee

Best moment this week: our first doctor’s appointment and ultrasound picture!

Miss anything? running as fast as I can

Movement: none

Food cravings: none in particular, but I am very picky right now

Anything making you queasy or sick? certain smells/foods make me gag very easily

Gender: not yet!

Labor signs: no

Symptoms: sore breasts (sorry, TMI)

Belly button in or out? in

Wedding rings on or off? on (and it’s kinda loose, uh oh)

Mood most of the time: tired, lethargic, unmotivated

Looking forward to: seeing a baby bump (I know it’s way early though)

This past weekend was amazing. It was full of fun and excitement as we dubbed the weekend, “Reveal Weekend.”

First off, we had our first doctor’s appointment! This moment has been very much anticipated as we were told it was the time to confirm the pregnancy and verify the EDD (estimated date of arrival). We were especially looking forward to this appointment as we decided that it would be our green light to start sharing our special news with close friends and family.

The appointment went very well! It took most of the morning: We met with my doctor, she did a ultrasound, pointed out to us our baby’s heart and the size of our baby. Turns out that the EDD was only off by one day! So I really am at 8 weeks and the estimated due date is September 7th. How cool was this: We were given a flash drive on which the sonogram pictures were added and then we get to keep the flash drive to share the pictures! The flash drive also has really cool resouces and information about the pregnancy, the hospital, and all sorts of cool stuff.

After meeting with my doctor, we met with a nurse who reviewed a ton of information with us and gave us a packet of paper. I got blood work and a urine test done after that. Then I could barely see straight – we were both starving! We went to Mimi’s Cafe. I had a corned beef hash. It wasn’t THAT great, but it was tolerable. I am just super picky these days, it’s hard to tell what will satisfy my hunger!

That night, we had dinner with my lovely sister at Red Robin (yum!). I made a great choice of appetizer: cheese sticks + onion rings. Then my burger was perfect. Winner winner, Red Robin dinner!

After dinner, we headed home and prepared for some of our closest friends to visit us. We managed to get them all together on this Friday night, and magically every single one of them (in this particular group) made it! Even the gal from far far away! (Ok, the bay area is not THAT far.) It was hard to contain our excitement as each friend walked through the door. But we had to wait until everyone was here. Finally, they all made it, and we set our plans in motion. We asked everyone to join on the couch in the family room for a group picture. Some of them dragged their feet (it was pretty late in the night already), but they managed to make it. Then my sister takes two cameras and prepares to take a picture. The hubs tells everyone to smile for a nice picture, first. *Click* there goes the first picture. Then he says, “Ok everyone, let’s do a funny one. Everyone say… ‘Sharisse is pregnant!'” And some of them actually said, “Sharisse is pregnant!” until they realized, What?! Is that true?! And I nodded and then the screaming and excitement just filled the whole house! Little did they know, my sister was recording their reactions on the camera! And last, but not least and certainly the best part… churros from Costco with TRIPLE BEAN vanilla ice cream and SALTED CARAMEL SAUCE from Trader Joe’s! We even warmed the churros… oh boy oh boy…



Chipotle’s Cilantro & Rice Recipe (I forgot where I got this from, but it was written by a Ramya Maddela)

Makes one big pot… I cut this recipe below in HALF and had leftovers with the group above

1 T butter or oil

2 t fresh cilantro, chopped fine

1 fresh key lime (or 1/2 regular lime)

1/2 t salt (kosher or sea salt)

1 cup long grain grain white rice (I used basmati, works very well)

2 cups water

  1. Saute the rice in butter or oil until almost translucent (as if you’re making a risotto).
  2. Add water, bring to a boil.
  3. As soon as the water begins to boil, turn the heat down low.
  4. Simmer, covered for 15-20 minutes, or until all water is absorbed.
  5. Turn off heat. DON’T PEEK. LEAVE IT COVERED FOR 30 MINUTES. (this is the steaming part and is very important. Chipotle steams rice every hour, according to source). This is waht makes the rice fluffy. You won’t be happy with yourself if you don’t do this. Be patient. Good things come to those who wait.
  6. Remove lid, let some of the steam out. It may be helpful to transfer rice into a mixing bowl for the next step (I didn’t do this).
  7. Mix salt and juice of key lime together until salt is dissolved.
  8. Pour it over rice, fluff with a fork.
  9. Sprinkle in cilantro and toss well to evenly coat with cilantro and lime mixture.
